Bio: William C. “Bill” Makler has been aggressively defending people accused of DUI in California for over 25 years, having started out as a public defender in Santa Cruz and then in Santa Barbara. He taught evidence at the Santa Barbara College of Law (2006-2008). He is widely known for having successfully sued the California Highway Patrol in a class action that forced the agency to send "detention only" certificates to persons they arrested but whose cases were rejected by the prosecutor's office and to see to it that their "arrest" records were vanquished. Many police departments throughout the state took notice and began following the mostly ignored legal obligation. He is a founder and President of Santa Barbara Defenders and a longstanding member of California DUI Lawyers' Ass'n, California Public Defenders Ass'n and California Attorneys for Criminal Justice.
